Selling live plants online — where the sale continues after delivery

BloomLeaf sells live plants and home decor. Plants are unusual in eCommerce: the customer’s experience of the product starts after delivery, and that determines whether they ever buy again.

The challenge

Two things decide a plant store’s economics: whether the buyer trusts the plant will arrive alive, and whether it survives long enough for them to buy another.

Our approach

We put care and difficulty on the product page: light needs, watering frequency, pet safety and a difficulty rating. Buyers pick a plant they can actually keep alive, which improves both first purchase and repeat rate.

Live-delivery assurance was made explicit — how plants are packed, what to do on arrival, and what happens if something arrives damaged. Removing that fear removed the main objection.

Then we bundled the obvious: plant plus pot plus soil plus feed, presented as a complete setup rather than four separate decisions.

What we built

Care & difficulty data

Light, watering, pet safety and a difficulty rating on every plant page.

Live-delivery assurance

Clear packing, arrival and replacement information to remove the main objection.

Complete setup bundles

Plant, pot, soil and feed sold together as one decision.

Care content hub

Guides that answer pre-purchase questions and reduce support load.

Space-led collections

Shop by room and light condition, not just by plant name.

Technical SEO

Care-guide content and collection structure targeting real plant searches.

The outcome

Accessory attach rate rose about 41% because the setup bundle removed three separate decisions.

Customer lifetime value improved roughly 34% — buyers who choose a plant matched to their light and routine keep it alive and come back. Care-related support tickets dropped about 28%.

“Telling people honestly how hard a plant is to keep alive sold more plants, not fewer.”
