Case study

Selling fragrance online, where the customer cannot smell the product

Dubai Aroma sells luxury perfumes and traditional attars. Fragrance is the hardest category to sell online for one obvious reason — the single most important sense is unavailable.

The challenge

You cannot demonstrate a scent through a screen, so a fragrance store has to translate smell into language, structure and confidence.

Our approach

We structured the catalogue by fragrance family and occasion — oud, floral, musk, fresh; daily wear, evening, gifting — so buyers navigate by what they like rather than by product name.

Notes were turned into a readable structure: top, heart and base, with how the fragrance evolves over wear and how long it lasts. That is the language fragrance buyers actually use.

To remove the commitment barrier we made discovery sets a first-class product — sample multiple fragrances, then buy the full bottle. It converts hesitant first-timers and raises order value at the same time.

The design itself was rebuilt to match the price point: dark, restrained, photography-led, with generous space.

What we built

Family & occasion structure

Navigate by oud, floral, musk, fresh — and by daily, evening or gifting.

Readable note pyramids

Top, heart and base notes with how the scent develops and how long it lasts.

Discovery sets

Sample-first products that remove the full-bottle risk for new buyers.

Premium visual design

Dark, photography-led design consistent with a luxury price point.

Gifting flow

Gift sets, presentation packaging and a clear gifting path for the season.

Trust & authenticity

Authenticity, longevity and sourcing detail placed near Add to Cart.

The outcome

Average order value rose about 58% — discovery sets did most of that work, because a sample set is a larger, easier first purchase than a single bottle.

Conversion on fragrance-family collection pages improved roughly 31%, and items per order rose by about 2.4.

“Letting people try before committing changed everything. They spend more on the first order, not less.”
